PHASE
I: WEST
The western segment (Phase I to those in the know) was
the first segment of the Greenway to have the bicycling
and walking paths paved. This segment was opened in summer
2000. The Greenway passes between Lake of the Isles and
Lake Calhoun and through the Uptown area of the city.
It is the most urbanized and densely populated of any
section along the Greenway. The bicycle and walking paths
in this segment are at grade from Chowen Avenue to Hennepin
Avenue and are in a trench from Hennepin eastward. Besides
passing through park land which is adjacent to Lake of
the Isles, the segment also parallels The Mall, a linear
park on the south side of the greenway between Hennepin
Avenue and Lake of the Isles Parkway. The Soo Line Garden
is a large community garden towards the eastern end of
this segment. The eastern end of this segment is more
industrial in character than the western end which is
predominantly residential and green space.
There are 10 neighborhoods which are at least partially
found on PHASE I of the Greenway or adjacent to it: Cedar
Isles Dean Neighborhood Association (CIDNA), West Calhoun
Neighborhood Council, Calhoun Area Residents Action Group
(CARAG), East Calhoun Community Organization, East Isles
Residents Association, Lyndale Neighborhood Association,
Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association, Whittier Alliance,
Central Neighborhood Improvement Association, and Phillips
West. For links to these neighborhoods,
