PHASE II: Central

The central segment (Phase II to those in the know) which goes from 5th Avenue South to Hiawatha Avenue is scheduled to have the bicycle and walking paths constructed in 2004 (maybe spilling over to 2005). The western portion of this corridor is more industrial than the east end which is mostly residential. The farthest east section from Cedar Avenue to Hiawatha Avenue is now heavy industry. The Soldier and Pioneer's Memorial Cemetery, also known as Layman's Cemetery, just east of Cedar Avenue is the only significant green space in this segment. There are several redevelopment projects which will impact the Greenway including the old Sears tower. The old grain elevators just east of the Sears tower have been demolished. 29th Street parallels the Greenway on the south side from 10th Avenue to Cedar Avenue. The entire segment is in the trench except for the last few blocks just west of Hiawatha Avenue.

There are 5 neighborhoods which are at least partially found on the Greenway or adjacent to it: Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association, Phillips West, Midtown Phillips, East Phillips Improvement Association, and Corcoran Neighborhood Organization
