H.W.S. Cleveland in 1882 in Suggestions for a System of Parks and Parkways, appealed to Park Commissioners to put aside their "present wants" and look to the future for their needs.

"Look forward a century, to the time when the city has a population of a million, and think what will be their wants. They will have a wealth enough to purchase all that money can buy, but all their wealth cannot purchase a lost opportunity, or restore natural features of grandeur and beauty, which would then possess priceless value, and which can preserve for them if you will but say the word and save them from destruction which certainly awaits them if you fail to utter it."

LAND USE PLANNING—to create, share and implement a 50 year vision for a beautiful Greenway physically integrated with surrounding communities. Our vision is to guide new developments so that they enhance the Greenway with windows, doors, open spaces, and human activity rather than blank walls, loading docks and parking ramps. Drafts of three land planning documents are viewable and downloadable from elsewhere on our site. The documents include a Vision Statement, Urban Design Goals, and a Zoning Overlay District. We are also pursuing additional public green spaces on land adjacent to the 100-foot-wide right-of-way, and better integration with nearby public parks. This will create resting places for passers by and gathering spots for locals.

ADOPT-A-GREENWAY—to keep the Greenway clean, safe, and inviting, and to increase community pride. Adopters may do clean-ups, plantings, and conduct special events like picnics. We still have openings…wandering through the Greenway can be fun even if you are picking up fast food wrappers and beverage containers as you go.

PUBLIC ART—to develop the Greenway as an art destination—reaching broad appeal and reflecting adjacent communities.

GREENING—To beautify the Greenway and define its character through community involvement in planning and plantings, stressing ecological design using native plants and runnoff water management.

TRANSIT PLANNING—to achieve the multiple goals of a beautiful, quiet, clean, green corridor and moving 7,300 passengers per day (by year 2020) along an express transit route.

OUTREACH—to involve more people in shaping and realizing the Greenway dream.

The Coalition raises its own funds for community organizing activities. Funding for the Coalition’s work comes from foundations, corporate donors, neighborhood organizations, individuals, and small businesses. The Coalition’s budget for 2001 is $155,000.
